Espera
Location - Alcobaça, Lisboa
Espera is a tiny winery operated by husband/wife duo Rodrigo Martins and Ana Leal. Rodrigo is an agronomic engineer and master in viticulture and oenology. For years he has worked as a consultant to wineries throughout Portugal, before starting Espera in 2014. The duo believe in a different cycle for their wines - one in which each bottling has its own speed and way of being, that each vintage brings something new to explore, and that each vineyard and each grape have their very own peculiar personalities.
Martins describes his approach to winemaking: "In the vineyards we use no herbicides, no synthetic pesticides, hand work most of vineyards activities and use no irrigation. In the winery we use only natural fermentations, no temperature control on our fermentation vessels, no fining, no filtration, low levels of sulfur".
"Sustainability is a way of thinking and working where the environment is always the first priority, and the quality of the fruit we produce is at the center of everything, to the benefit of my generation and future generations."

Other: "Nat'Cool" is a concept initiated by legendary Portuguese producer Dirk Niepoort in which various other wineries have come together to produce easy-to-drink, crowd-pleasing "natural" wines. Each of these wines highlights one of Portugal's regional grapes and are simultaneously terroir-driven and smashable! And they always come in 1-liter bottles, so there's a little extra to go around!
